Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to first grade! I hope everyone had a wonderful and fun summer! I am so excited to meet each and every one of you! The first few days of school are always busy and exciting so make sure to get a good night's sleep and have a healthy breakfast. We have snack time every day so please remember to bring a healthy snack. Also, if you would like to share some information about yourself, please bring a picture or two to present to your classmates. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will be FULL days. The school day starts at 8:20, the dismissal time will be 2:55. Our class will have gym on Thursday this week. Please be sure to wear or bring sneakers to school on this day. Lastly, if you have an art smock or t-shirt, please bring it in labeled with your child's name. We are going to have a great year and I am looking forward to growing and learning with each of you! See you on Wednesday, September 9th!
Read, Read, Read!
Did you know that 80% of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year? Reading is one of the most important activities that can help students develop a rich vocabulary, world knowledge, and interest in a variety of topics. Because reading is so important to developing learners, it is imperative that students continue reading over the summer months. Interaction with books can include a student reading to himself, to a family member, or even a pet; listening to a story; or, group reading and taking turns reading certain pages or text parts. To ensure your child continues progressing over the summer, please take the time to read with them and discuss the reading. Thank you in advance for your help and support in furthering your children's love for reading!
Week at a Glance
Hello Parents! This week you may have noticed something new in your child's folder! We will be continuing to send home a weekly sheet with all of the Reading and Language Arts skills that will be taught each week. The sheet includes the phonics skill and spelling words, comprehension strategies and skills, vocabulary words, and sight words, just to name a few! In addition to being sent home, the weekly sheet will also be posted in a new folder on the class webpage titled "Week at a Glance." If you have any questions about it, please let me know. We hope this information is helpful to you at home when working with your child!
Check out the activities!
Please take some time to check out all of the games and activities on our class webpage! The skills required for each game supports the first grade curriculum. For additional Math practice, explore the enVision Math 2.0 link at the top of the page. Enjoy, and remember to have some fun with learning!
Word Wall Words
Please be aware that there is a folder titled "Word Wall Words" on the class webpage. This folder contains all of our word wall/sight words to date. Students should be able to read this list of words. They are what we call "trick words" and cannot be tapped/sounded out. The students should be able to recognize the words. This folder can be used as a tool for practice reading the words. It will be updated weekly with the new words.
